Find out how Troy expanded his small business with help from ASII.
Despite his years of experience as an electrician for a larger company, Troy was repeatedly passed over for promotions. In 2005, he decided to start his own company to better serve the needs of his community and build a legacy to pass on to his wife and three sons. In Troy’s previous position, he had never had the opportunity to utilize his training to create a cleaner and healthier environment. Seeing the opportunity to provide low-income New Orleans families with greener, more efficient homes he wanted to expand the capacity and service offerings of his electrical business and is now a licensed Solar Energy Equipment contractor in the State of Louisiana. His company, Sunergy Solar Solutions, has done work with the Make It Right Foundation, a non-profit organization that is rebuilding the Katrina-devastated Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans with affordable, energy-efficient homes. Troy will use his loan to mobilize contracts that will come through the New Orleans Energy Smart Program pipeline, for which he was recently certified. Troy uses his “spare time” growing an organic garden in his backyard and promoting urban farming among other families in his area. He also works with his neighborhood community center and serves as a mentor to youth.
