Owning a home is the dream of many American households. Establishing roots in a community and building equity in one's home are certain things to be proud of. Since Hurricane Katrina, many of our community’s residents have faced increasingly unaffordable housing costs. Post-Katrina housing remains unaffordable for many, with 36 percent of renters in the city paying more than 50 percent of their pre-tax income on rent and utilities in 2012, up from 24 percent of renters in 2004.
ASII addresses these problems and helps residents fulfill their dreams of homeownership through credit & debt counseling, first-time homebuyer education, and foreclosure intervention counseling.
ASII established its Counseling and Financial Education Program upon its 2006 HUD certification as a Housing Counseling Agency. Since the program’s inception, more than 2,000 individuals and families have been served through workshops and one-on-one counseling sessions. Home Ownership workshops are primarily conducted at the Clifford Rosenthal Community Center and Preservation Resource Center. However, because of its partnership with ASI Federal Credit Union, the counseling team can make special accommodations for counseling sessions at many of the credit union’s branches in locations such as Mid-City, Uptown, Downtown, Westbank, and Northshore.
